New Albany Recycles Over 1,500,000 Pounds - January 20th, 2010
Southern Indiana Waste Systems(SIWS) announced today that 1,526,000 pounds of material collected in the City of New Albany was recycled in 2009. This is more than a 5% increase from previous years. Robert Lee, President of SIWS, stated that “the citizens of New Albany have again demonstrated their concern for our environment through their continued recycling efforts”. Mr. Lee also said that the increase was obtained, in part, through a change in the collection process to a single-stream collection, where drivers do not separate the material at the curb. The material is now separated at the processing center. This change in collection was made available by switching to a processing plant in New Albany.
Mayor Doug England commented “It is our responsibility to preserve the environment for future generations. I am proud of what our citizens accomplishedin 2009. If we continue to work togetherto press ahead, I am sure we can exceed this progress in 2010.”
